  • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

    • ​founded in 1908, racial justice organization that has evolved its mission with issues currently facing Black Americans & has pioneered many great civil rights leaders

  • Congress of Racial Equality

    • ​formed in 1942 in response to WWII, organization dedicated to racial equality  

  • Black Panthers

    • black power political party founded in Oakland in 1966

    • branded a threat to national security & often hunted by FBI

  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee

    • organization designed to encourage student participation in the civil rights movement, including protests and sit-ins, founded in the 1960s

  • Mattachine Society

    • founded in 1950, one of the earliest gay rights organizations in America

  • Daughters of Bilitis

    • first lesbian civil rights group in America founded in 1955

  • Gay Liberation Front

    • chapters of gay activists founded in 1969, in response to the Stonewall Riot

  • Furies Collective

    • community of lesbian separatists founded in early 1970s
