What  is  a  counterculture?

Countercultures refer to subcultures that form out of a new definition of values and beliefs, often diametrically opposed to what is considered a mainstream or societal norm

The counterculture of the 1960s emerged as a rejection of societal norms left over from the 1950s - tensions often existed across generational lines as youth cultures began to reject the idealized 'American Dream' of the generation before them.
